VANISH provides professional and confidential support for all people affected by adoption as their need arises. In addition, staff members often have a personal experience of separation from family of origin through adoption and are able to offer appropriate assistance and support to our service users with empathy and respect.
Support can be provided either individually or in a group:
- in person
- by telephone
- by email or
- in a support group
VANISH Support Groups Melbourne 2020 and Regional Support Groups 2020 provide an opportunity to meet and share with others who have had similar experiences. These friendly and informal meetings offer a non-judgemental environment where you can speak about what is on your mind and how you are feeling or you can just come and listen.
Mixed Support Group
(Adult Adopted Persons, Mothers, Fathers and Adoptive Parents)
The mixed support group allows us to hear all sides of the adoption experience. Everyone’s experience is individual but when every story is added to the mix it can help to inform, enlighten and educate.
"At my first group I didn’t know what to expect but with each group I got to learn more about how we all feel the loss of separation and also how people manage their grief – all in so many different ways. It gave me hope, at times inspiration, and but most importantly courage to continue with my reunion.” (Anon Mother)
Adult Adoptees Only Support Group
The Adopted Persons only group is for people over 18 who were adopted. It provides an opportunity for individuals to share their experiences and feelings and to gain empathy and understanding from one another.
“Finally got to my first meeting last night and I loved it - I think it was one of the first times in my life I felt no need to edit myself and that I was in a room where every person was just like me, though different” (Annette – adoptee)
Donor Conceived Group
This support group for donor-conceived people over 18 provides an opportunity to talk, share, think, listen, support and empower.
Groups are held regularly at the locations listed below and are facilitated by VANISH staff and volunteers, and in the case of the Donor-Conceived Group by a facilitator from VARTA.
