Oral History: Giving a Public Voice to Adult Adoptees

Dr Alison Ingram’s doctoral research, Countering the Silence of Adoption Trauma: Towards an Ethical and Authentic Post-Verbatim Theatre Model (2024), explores the history of adoption in Australia and the lifelong impacts of closed-records adoption legislation.

After over a year of collaboration with six adult adoptees, Alison developed a powerful new work of theatre grounded in the real and commonly shared events from their lived experiences. The result is Infans VOIC’D: A History Play in Five Acts.

Premiering in June 2022, VANISH members were invited to the first performances. Originally intended for the stage, the play’s production was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, in a twist of timing, lockdowns ultimately opened the door to new possibilities as the work was reimagined as a hybrid audio-drama with a live performance component.

Alison plans to remount Infans VOIC’D in December as a special fundraiser to support the 2025 Performance Project, bringing the voices of adult adoptees to wider audiences through the power of audio-drama.
