Funding for Counselling
Medicare rebates are available for individual and/or group counselling sessions. A general practitioner (GP) can assess your eligibility, prepare a mental health plan and refer you to the appropriate practitioner.
You may be able to access the service of a mental health professional through Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS). Ask your GP about a referral to ATAPS.
If you see a psychiatrist in private practice, Medicare will refund part of the fee; some psychiatrists bulk bill which means there is no fee to be paid. If you are seen as a public patient at a community health centre or a public hospital, the service is likely to be free. If you wish to see a psychiatrist, ask your GP who will provide you with a referral.
