Register of Adoption Counsellors

The Register of Adoption Counsellors contains information to assist you to find a counsellor who has knowledge of separation and adoption issues. It will inform you about who each practitioner is, what they do and whether they have completed the VANISH training.

You can locate counsellors according to your own post code or post codes nearest to where you live or alternatively you may choose to browse the total list. As these services are not emergency services, you may need to wait for an appointment.

By maintaining the Register of Adoption Counsellors, we are not making or giving a referral to any particular practitioner. The purpose of the Register is to provide general information about where service users can access or receive assistance from practitioners who provide adoption sensitive services.

This Register is not a complete listing of all practitioners who work in the field of adoption in Victoria. The practitioners who appear as part of the Register of Adoption Counsellors are those who have chosen to provide us with their details and who have declared that the information they have given is true and correct. The suitability of a practitioner to your personal situation can only be determined by you.

The Register of Adoption Counsellors must not be used for any commercial purpose. The use of addresses or other details of any person or organisation listed in the Practitioner Directory as part of a commercial mailing list is expressly prohibited.

 Funding for Counselling

  • Medicare
Medicare rebates are available for individual and/or group counselling sessions.  A general practitioner (GP) can assess your eligibility, prepare a mental health plan and refer you to the appropriate practitioner.
You may be able to access the service of a mental health professional through Access to Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS). Ask your GP about a referral to ATAPS.
  • Psychiatrist
If you see a psychiatrist in private practice, Medicare will refund part of the fee; some psychiatrists bulk bill which means there is no fee to be paid.  If you are seen as a public patient at a community health centre or a public hospital, the service is likely to be free.  If you wish to see a psychiatrist, ask your GP who will provide you with a referral.
