Mandy has been part of the VANISH community for longer than her Tuesday morning volunteer shifts might suggest. As an adoptee, she came to VANISH seeking support during her own search for family in the early 90s.
“As an adoptee, I was always curious to explore my family of origin,” she says. “It was shortly after the birth of my first child that I decided to undertake a search to find my parents. I contacted VANISH and they offered an excellent and compassionate service during the investigation process.”
Her adoption journey, like many, holds both joy and complexity. “My reunion was initially successful with both parents but unfortunately my mother gradually found it too difficult to keep in touch on a permanent basis. The relationship with my father’s family has always remained very close.” Ultimately, the experience taught her, as she puts it, that “where life can pose some challenges and disappointments, there will ultimately be a positive outcome as well.”
Mandy’s initial experience with VANISH never left her. “I was keen to become involved with VANISH because they supported me so much on a personal level. I felt that I wanted to give back what I had received from their guidance and care.”
These days, Mandy volunteers every Tuesday, spending a couple of hours on tasks that range from calling members who have requested information to helping staff with administrative work. She also served on the VANISH Committee of Management for two terms. And if you’ve noticed a difference in the garden at the back of the VANISH building lately, that’s Mandy’s work. “One of my creative goals has been to transform the garden on the balcony planter box,” she says. “My aim is to hopefully bring joy to people when they see an array of colourful flowers.”
Mandy brings a varied professional background to her volunteering. She has spent most of her career teaching piano in schools and privately, and holds a postgraduate certificate in counselling. Outside work, she’s a keen Essendon supporter and tennis fan. She is also connected with two other charities where she provides support and guidance.
We’re grateful to have Mandy in our corner—and in our garden.
VANISH’s work has been made possible with the help of hundreds of volunteers and supporters throughout our 30+ year history. If you’re interested in volunteering with VANISH, read more here or contact us.
